New York City mayor Bill de Blasio has become the latest Democrat to toss his hat into the ring for the 2020 presidential race, joining the swelling crowd of contenders bidding to unseat US President Donald Trump. “Donald Trump must be stopped. I’ve beaten him before and I will do it again,” he said in a video announcement posted online Thursday morning. “I’m Bill de Blasio and I’m running for president because it’s time we put working people first.”
Mr de Blasio’s entrance into the race makes him the 23rd person to seek to run against Mr Trump in the general election next year.
He will face an uphill battle for the Democratic nomination. Former vice-president Joe Biden, Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont and Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusett are among those who have announced plans to run in recent months.
The announcement from the two-term mayor of the most populous US city was widely expected. He has been unofficially campaigning for months, visiting key states like Iowa and New Hampshire.
