The Minister of women affairs ,Aisha Abubakar has called on all stakeholders to double efforts to end the scourge of drug abuse among Children.
Speaking at a press briefing to flag off activities to mark this year’s children’s day, the Minister said 14.4% of people between the ages of 16 and 54 in Nigeria are involved in drug abuse.
” It is worrisome to note that,a great number of our young ones are involved in illicit drugs and Nigeria’s profile in drug trafficking and drug abuse has been on the increase ,over the years .It is in response to this undesirable state of affairs ,that this years theme of celebration is focused on_ DRUG ABUSE AMONG CHILDREN: ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGES”.
The Minister cited increase in vices, as the effect of drug abuse.
“Drug abuse among Children has led to increase in mental health, temporal or permanent absence from school, crimes such as theft, cyber crimes,ritual killings, armed robbery among other vices in the country.”
She called on NDLEA, NAFDAC,Schools,traditional rulers,religious leaders, the CSOs,NGOs, FBOs and parents to support government efforts at creating awareness on drugs in the schools and communities.
The children represented by students from various schools in the FCT, thanked the government for the concern and appealed for closer monitoring of children in the schools and home.
Aisha Abubakar assured the students that government will set up rehabilitation centers in each Geographical zone in the country.Responding to a question about Leah Sharibu,she said government is not relenting in efforts to secure her release.
Also present were representatives from PACEDA,ROLAC,NAFDAC,NDLEA and UNICEF.
