LAST CHRISTMAS: A CHRISTMAS LOVE STORY_Ada Nkong

Sharon turned over to look at Dave again. He lay fast asleep a peaceful look on his face. She leaned over and dropped a soft kiss on his forehead. He looked every inch an Angel, her angel.
She picked up the card on the bedside stool and read it again for the umpteenth time.
Merry Christmas Sunshine
I love you at Christmas
I will love you always or forever whichever comes first.

Tears welled up in her eyes. She couldn’t believe that just last Christmas she had been a nervous wreck, heartbroken, crest fallen and absolutely sure her world had come to an end.
Donald , the one guy she had given her love innocence and everything had told her on Christmas eve that he needed a break. For the first time he had told her about his childhood sweetheart Maope, apparently she was back in the country haven completed her masters program in the UK. He ran into her at the airport where he had gone to drop off Sharon’s cousin two weeks earlier and they had picked up where they paused . It turns out the misunderstanding between them was caused by a setup which they had unearthed, forgiven each other and were contemplating rebuilding their relationship. She was completely devastated.
For the best part of the next three months she had been a shadow of herself. On valentines day she had hidden herself away not daring to go out and run into the two love birds who were the talk of her circle of friends. To Donald, it seemed like she had never happened as he never, not even once, looked back.
Her birthday came in April and as she always did, Sharon speyes the night before taking stock of her year. It dawned on her that she was not being fair to herself. Donald had moved on and she needed to pick up the pieces of her life and move on too. Suddenly she was full of zest and swung into action. She booked an appointment with her hair stylist, the spa and even a studio for a makeover. She decided it would not just be a birthday but a rebirth.
By nightfall, it was a brand new Sharon that got into her car and drove homeward. She even turned on the music and was singing along as she drove. Life was suddenly looking like it was worth living. Tomorrow, she would take herself out for a treat. Sharon would reinvent her self. She smiled to herself. World Sharon day was tomorrow and this town would certainly know it.
The tap on her window jerked her back to reality. “Can you please leave the road and go and continue your day dreaming elsewhere?”. She looked at him and gave him the once over. Instead of snapping at him as she would have done just a few days back. He shook his head in disbelief, ” crazy people everywhere but this one sure was lovely” As if she had not been outrageous enough, she reached for her wallet and gave him her complimentary card. “Join me for a drink tomorrow, its my birthday she quipped”.
Horns were blaring already and if she didn’t drive off soon, they would be an angry mob by her car soon. She waved Goodbye, winked at him and drove off.
Well for a newly reborn person she sure had done a lot today she thought as she opened her door and let herself in.
A hand reached out and pulled her close for a hug. She snuggled up to him thinking how much she had come to love him in such a short time. ” Sleepy head” she teased him as she buried her head in his chest.” What’s for breakfast? ” he asked with eyes still closed. ” Me “, she answered and jumped out of bed. Knowing his huge appetite she needed an early start in the kitchen if they were to make it to Christmas service.
To be continued.
