Her favorite carol ‘O holy night’ played soflty in the background as she swiftly went about making sandwiches and pancakes for breakfast. She made a mental note to buy more eggs tomorrow when she goes grocery shopping. Thankfully, there were still two eggs left, she would make an omelette for him with those.
Just as she put down the sauce pan and made to reach out for the dishes to set the table, somebody deftly blind folded her from behind.
” Don’t make a fuss, just follow me”, she heard. Sharon stopped dead in her tracks. What could be happening, what was he up to this time?
“We will be late to church”, she protested weakly. Shhhhhh, keep moving.
She felt herself being shepherded out of the door ,she could sense they were in the garden behind.
” Gosh, Dave can be an ass” , she whined to herself. “The food will grow cold”.
He led her a bit further then asked her to stop. He took off the blindfold and right there in font of her was a brand new Maroon colored Chevrolet all tied up in ribbons with a card on the bonnet addressed to her.
No, she couldn’t understand. What was this car doing here? She locked up herself last night and there was nothing there. Dave had been complaining of delayed payments for the contracts he handled. In fact she had decided to spend Christmas eve with him to cheer him up. She did all the shopping with her money and even dashed him 5 k yesterday to fuel his car.
How could he then afford this car? Anyway, he had given her a Christmas card already, why was that card lying there with her name on it?
” We will be late for church mate” ,he teased. “Read your card, give me a hug and let’s go have breakfast”.
Sharon picked up the envelope. The card in it was very small but there was something else in the envelope. The card said, “please marry me”.
She turned to stare at him and found him on his knees, holding out an engagement ring. He mouthed the words please . She was awestruck. The emotions were overwhelming. She stretched out her fingers for him to slip on the ring then held him tight saying ” yes Dave, I will marry you”.
He kissed her on the brow and frowned.” Hey, how come you like me but you don’t like my gift”? He pointed towards the car. She looked helplessly at him as if to say ” this is too much”.
“Never mind, we will just trek to church if you won’t take me in your car”
“Why Dave, tell me why you are doing all these”? She asked.
” Because I love you”, he replied and dropped a kiss on her cheek. He picked up the envelope from the ground, brought out the car keys and handed them to her. ” Go ahead Sunshine, try out your new Baby”.
Sharon managed to get into the car, turned the keys in the ignition and then broke down in tears again. This was so different from last Christmas.
” Hey, I am hungry! Local man needs his breakfast ” he laughed.
Sharon came out of the car and took both his hands in hers. ” Thanks Baby,you mean the world to me and I love you so much”.
They walked hand in hand back into the house and quickly had breakfast. She tidied up and rushed into the bathroom. Better be late than miss church on Christmas day, she reasoned.
As she got under the shower, the events of the morning came back to her in a flash.
She went down memory lane again to how it all started.
