IWD 2020: Good Wife Vs Good Woman?_Ada Nkong

Women have been urged to excel in all that they do as this will help the cause for gender parity.
Speaking on the sidelines if a roundtable organized by the Development bank of Nigeria to mark the International women’s day, Mrs Jane Unah ,a banker stressed the need for an all round self improvement in women.
“If you are not focused on improving, you will never look in the right direction”.
We need to look at the home front, look at education, look at business,wherever we find ourselves as something we need to do and do it exceptionally well.”
” it is not only when you are a good wife, that you are a good woman”
She stressed the need for increased girls child education.
“If we can really focus on education for a start, if we can tackle the issue of girl child education, then we will really go very far”.
Commenting on the need for a paradigm shift she says, ” we should get women to see that they can add value because some women don’t have confidence in themselves. “
” The issue of taking loans and starting business, some don’t see it as something a woman can do.We have to change that mindset, get more women to see that they can achieve, create, be the best at what they are doing”.
An entrepreneur Toyin Odunlake expressed confidence in the power of advocacy to change the statusquo.
” we are having the conversation, we are having respectable organizations like DBN initiating and having programs. With every passing year more organizations see that if they don’t do more for women, they are the ones losing out”.
Odunlake expressed confidence in the Nigerian woman and her resilience.
“Nigerian women are some of the most ballsy, courageous and fearless women on the planet and in Africa, it is already engrained in them, it’s in our culture.”
“Those that see the opportunity, seize it. My Grandmother wasn’t educated but she built 3 houses from her business without external funding or loans”. She sent her Children to school from her business”.
In her message ahead of the International Women’s day 2020, the chief of UN Women said in her message “The benefits of gender equality are not just for women and girls, but “for everyone whose lives will be changed by a fairer world”.
The theme for this years celebration is “Each for equal”.
