The Senate has passed for second reading a bill seeking to allow for independent candidacy for elections in Nigeria.
The Bill titled ‘ a Bill for an Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to make provisions for Independent Candidate in an election and for other matters therein’ , was passed yersterday and forwarded to the Senate Constitution Amendment Committee for further deliberation.
The Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege sponsored the independent candidacy bill though Senators Abba Moro and Stella Oduah had also sponsored the same bill individually.
The upper legislative chamber also passed for second reading a bills seeking to define who is an indigene of a State; to enable women to be identified as indigenes of a State by virtue of Marriage when running for an Office; to specify the minimum number of Youths and Women to be appointed as Ministers, Ambassadors and State Commissioners.
Also passed for second reading, is a bill for an Act to make provision for change of name of the area referred to as Egbado” in Ogun State to “Yewa” as contained in the First Schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; and to specify the time frame for the conduct of Population Census.
