Before the covid pandemic, oxygen was just another gas known perhaps a little more than the others because even nursery school children know that we humans breath in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide.
As I walked into the Yaba infectious disease hospital at night to check on my mum, the sight I met humbled me and put oxygen several pedestals above other gases. I also saw felt a deep sense of ingratitude for the unlimited free supply of Oxygen I have enjoyed for over two decades.
I could see patients inside open ambulances and even private cars packed in the fields been given oxygen. The tall , quiet cylinders on a national duty to save lives were being taken to and fro to where they were in highest demand.
The man in the room next to hers kept needing them to bring oxygen cylinders to his room , I couldn’t tell why there seemed to be a problem giving him a steady supply as he obviously needed it.
Watching the medical personnel attend to so many people at the same time and yet keep their calm, not minding the risk they were being exposed to every minute, only one word came to mind, sacrifice.
As I watch different families crying and begging that God save their loved ones from covid, and see up close people taking each breath with labored force as if their lives depended on it, which it does, I begin to wonder how people can make light of covid and feign fury at the government for perpetuating the farce.
Covid is realer now than ever before, many are hanging between life and death and so many are gone without even knowing covid got them.
Its so much easier to wear a mask and use sanitizers than wait in line for over one hour calling people to bear witness that your oxygen had not been brought all this while.
Choose the easy way out, take the vaccine and put some distance between covid and you before you come up close with covid.
