The Federal government is committed to ensuring that essential institutions,systems and mechanisms to facilitate the quality of life, economic and social participation of older persons are guaranteed.
The Minister of humanitarian affairs Hajiya Sadiya Farouq who was represented by the permanent secretary, ministry of humanitarian affairs, Alhaji Bashir Alkali made this known at the inception meeting of the national technical working group for the development of a strategic plan for the national senior citizens center.
According to the minister,” it is essential that the NSCC determines its vision for the future as well as its goals and objectives”.
” it is also necessary to determine the processes, approaches,partnerships and structures for actualization of stakeholders participation.”
She urged participants to contribute meaningfully to the deliberations.
In her address, the Director General, NSCC, Dr Emem Omokaro said enhancing the center’s institutional capacity to mainstream issues concerning senior citizens that are hitherto marginalized and uncoordinated into relevant sector implementation plan as well as provision of concrete framework for execution and coordination of inter- sectoral programs are critical to NSCC’s success.
According to her,” NSCC’s collaboration with Expanded Social Protection for inclusive Development is a deliberate effort to provide these critical answers to inclusion and participation of senior citizens”.
” The development of a ten year strategy for NSCC is to develop a credible working document which would serve as a guide for the conduct of affairs of NSCC: it is to identify NSCC’s strategic priorities,processes,approaches to realizing NSCC’s mandate of integration of senior citizens in development”.
The technical working group membership is drawn from seven major critical stakeholders; MDAs, relevant professional bodies, academia, senior citizens,CSOs, private sector and international organizations.
