The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Abuja Council, Emmanuel Ogbeche has pledged the union’s commitment to advocacy for the rights of Older Persons, especially the domestication of the national policy on ageing in the 36 states of the federation.
According to a statement jointly signed by the Chairman JONAN Comrade Maxwell Eseigbe and the secretary Francisca Ogar, Ogbeche made the commitment at his office during a courtesy visit by the head media and Public Communications of the National Senior Citizens Center, Mr Omini Oden. Also present were executives of the Journalists Network for Agieng in Nigeria, a body of journalists mandated by the NUJ to carry out advocacy on issues of ageing in Nigeria.
According to the statement, Ogbeche noted that the Nigerian Union of Journalists through the Journalists Network for Ageing in Nigeria, JONAN would be available to help increase awareness and value reorientation including the requisite vocabulary that would eradicate ageism by propagating the appropriate terms for describing Older Persons.
It says Oden, while presenting the National Senior Citizens Center Act, 2017 and the National Policy of Ageing, restated the Centre’s desire to drive it’s advocacy through JONAN and solicited for more synergy in promoting discuss on issues surrounding ageing.
He said the NSCC is focused on mining all its partners across the divide of public and private sectors with a view to properly educate Nigerians on the tremendous assets senior citizens represent.
Oden said this would be carried out with particular interest, in the age-friendly environment which would be totally reliant on data systems and integration of the numbers for implementation and plan.
