As Removal of Fuel Subsidy Remains on the Front Burner.. _Ada Nkong

For several years, the removal of fuel subsidy has been an issue of national concern.

Different administrations have toyed with the idea of removal but public opinion has been for the most part that it will increase the hardship Nigerians are undergoing.

An opinion that may not be too popular is one expressed by Yusuf Ali ( SAN) . To him the masses clamour for subsidy to remain because they lack understanding of the issues surrounding it. He says ” how many cars does the poor man own to be affected by the presence or absence of fuel subsidy”? In his opinion fuel subsidy favors the rich.

To quote him, ” fuel subsidy has always been a scam”. His reasons are simple. Have we the data on exactly how much fuel is consumed in Nigeria? How many units of fuel are being subsidized per time and how much exactly does this amount to?

Infact, now that subsidy is in place how has it helped the poor?

February is here and thankfully the removal of subsidy which was anticipated to start this month has been put on hold. Perhaps before it is finally removed? We may have more answers concerning the issues surrounding subsidy.

FCT area council elections come up this month. Being at the center and the home of INEC, we hope to use it as a litmus test to measure the level of preparedness for 2023. Security wise, we don’t expect more issues because Abuja people are on the peaceful side. We wish them free and fair credible elections.

Happy new month from all of us on Newsannex. We will continue to inform to impact.
