Former Japanese leader Shinzo Abe is in critical condition and undergoing emergency treatment after he was shot on Friday morning in Nara, Japan, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the neck, according to officials.
Two shots can be heard in video footage of the incident, which took place as Abe delivered an election campaign speech.
Police have arrested a man in his 40s on suspicion of attempted murder and retrieved what appeared to be a homemade gun, NHK reported.
Abe is the longest-serving Japanese Prime Minister in history. He stepped down as leader in 2020, citing health reasons.
