Wiki for Senior Citizens Network, marks it’s first anniversary today, August 5 2023.
It started as a platform for senior citizens to network and upgrade their digital skills through editing Wikipedia and has grown to a membership strength of over 100 members.
Through its physical training and online meetings, members (now comprising of both senior citizens and young adults who accompany their parents and grandparents) capacity is being built and different activities engaged in to contribute to the body of knowledge about Africa and Nigeria especially through edit-a-thons.
Some of the activities embarked upon in the course of this one year are as below:
1)Training on how to create an account on Wikipedia.
2) Training on editing on Wikipedia English, Wiki data and translation into different Nigerian languages
3)Participation in Wiki Loves Africa 2023 Climate and weather under the category of Wiki for Senior Citizens Network
4)Editing works on prominent and young environmentalist in Africa
5)Editing and adding contents on different articles on weather conditions and environmental issues that affect African and Africans.
6) Inviting a resource person to train Senior Citizens on photography(How to take good photos and the technicalities involved in picture taking)
7)Training on how to upload pictures, videos and audios on Wiki Commons.
8)Collecting and uploading pictures, videos and audios on Wiki Commons
9) Two of our members got certificate as Kiwix for school ambassador
10) participating in movement strategy goal six training by Igbo Wikimedia User Group
Obiageli Ezeilo,the initiator spoke on the journey so far.
“We want to celebrate and honor the invaluable contributions of our seniors who have paved way for future generations with their wisdom, resilience and love.
For our anniversary we take a moment to recognize the incredible journey that each one of our senior citizens has undertaken.As we reflect on this journey we are humbled by the strength and courage of each in overcoming the challenges that have been thrown to us through our endeavor we have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and life lessons,we have shared our stories and experiences that have the power to inspire and guide us. We have shared and learnt so much wisdom,so many activities, so much knowledge from all the activities that we have done in Wikipedia,we have been able to recognize and understand the power of free knowledge though we acknowledge challenges we have faced”.
While celebrating this mile stone, the network is excited to have come this far and looks forward to increased engagement and more members for greater impact.
