Abuja Bound Flight Diversion to Asaba : FG Debunks Bad Weather Narrative, to Sanction Erring Officials

By Ada Nkong

The internet was on Sunday flooded with reports of Abuja bound passengers aboard a United Airline flight that landed in Asaba instead of Abuja.

The Airline had put out a statement saying it acted on advisory of bad weather from the Control Tower.
After a technical session with Regulators, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has clarified that the weather in Abuja was fine and the incident happened because it was a wetlease flown by a foreign Pilot with no knowledge of the Nigerian terrain.

Some resolutions from the technical session with Regulators like NCAA, FAAN, NSIB and NIMET include compulsory presence of Nigerian Pilots and crew aboard wetleases and withdrawal of the licences of Internal Regulators who fail to prevent such incidents.

The Minister restated the Ministry’s commitment to the safety of Nigerians who fly and added that a Committee has been set up to ensure compensation for delayed and cancelled flights. He gave NSIB 10 days to investigate and report back.

Following the recent Incident where United Airlines heading to Abuja landed at Asaba the Minister of Aviation has summoned regulatory agencies in aviation to a technical session.
Speaking at the start of the session, the minister of aviation and aerospace development Festus Keyamo said such incidents are due to failure of regulation and need to be reviewed to forestall future recurrence
