Ahead of the world elder abuse day, the Nigeria senior citizens center met with journalists network for ageng in Nigeria to discuss activities to boost sensitization on ageism.
Mr Omini Oden, head corporate affairs,media and communication NSCC who represented the DG Namm,Dr Emem Omokaro at the meeting stressed the need for JONAN to intensify efforts on sensitization and advocacy as awareness on ageism is still very low in Nigeria.
He further said the NSCC has made a landmark in the welfare of the aged in Nigeria with the recent launch of Geriatric social care sector and centers and is working with the relevant agencies to ensure that the rights of older persons is upheld.
Responding on behalf of the Journalists Network for Ageing in Nigeria, Princess Joy Udam, the vice-chair person commended the NSCC for the progress made so far towards mainstreaming older persons issues in Nigeria.
She assured the NSCC that JONAN is fully prepared to discharge her watchdog and agenda setting responsibility in the interest of older persons in Nigeria.
According to her, the Dr.Omokaro led leadership of the NSCC had set a standard in issues of older persons in Nigeria and have in their short time of existence brought about a changed outlook on ageing in Nigeria.
