World Elder Abuse Awareness day 2024: NSCC Harps on Justice for Elders

The need to respect and uphold the dignity of older persons has been emphasized.The DG NSCC,Dr Emem Omokaro made the call at an intergenerational dialogue to mark the world elder abuse day held in Abuja.

Speaking to journalists at the event, the DG warned that failure to provide adequate care and inclusion for older persons today would be 2050 leave Nigeria with 30 million older persons who are vulnerable, a situation she said would compromise the savings of younger persons .

The permanent secretary ministry of humanitarian affairs Mr Abel Enitan represented by Mrs Agnes Nkechi commended the NSCC for its proactive programs,adding that elder justice is non negotiable and must be protected.

The elder justice charter which will guide volunteers and provide direction in upholding the rights of older persons was launched as well as a debate on the status of elder abuse in Nigeria.

Youth peace and security network came first in the debate followed by Lola center for the needy, Markanges touching lives initiatives was third and the Scout association of Nigeria Abuja council fourth.

Present at the event were representatives from the ministry of education, WOGRAM, ministry of humanitarian affairs, senior citizens and other relevant stakeholders.
