Ms. SUG President, Blessing Alims,
I have perused your justification for appointing 50 political aides.
My reservations please:
- There are 175 Universities in Nigeria and 53 Federal Universities. Thus, student unionism is not a new concept in Nigeria and indeed in the world. Unical Alumni is being bombarded with negative reactions regarding this strange and controversial action of your Administration.
- Nigeria comprises about 300 million persons under one President. How many Ministers and Aides does the President of Nigeria have?
- The Vice-chancellor of Unical has the staff and students, both undergraduate and postgraduate including national and global stakeholders to deal with, amidst diverse Faculties, Departments, Institutes and Directorates, how many aides does she have?
- Which Students Union governance in history did you draw inspiration from?.
Recall two former Governors did this as Governors and it attracted outright condemnation from all sane and rational minds.
My dear President,is that a worthy administrative practice to copy from as a student leader ?
Today one is running from the courts , while the other has gone into political obscurity
None of their former aides can help them , itās so bad that, even getting a phone call from them is now a privilege !
Remember also that as a female leader, your actions and inaction will have an impact on the advocacy for women in governance and the 35% affirmative action, do you want to negatively impact the fight for more women political office.
- What would be the oversight function of the Student Senate with this number of aides in place? What roles will the Presidents of the various students associations, including Faculty Presidents and their Vice, Departmental Students’ heads as well as the very established fourth estate of the realm play in your administration considering your 50 political aides. You are less than 3 months in office perhaps we shall see many more of such appointments as you progress.
- It is good to be innovative as a leader and make headlines but I must tell you that your present action is rather attracting negative reactions which are tantamount to image smearing for our prestigious University.
- I therefore strongly advise you to reconsider your governance style so that our University will continue to make positive national headlines.
I speak not just as a father but also as a concerned and high profile Alumnus of the University of Calabar and a permanent stakeholder of our cherished Malabor Republic.
Again in your usual kindness, you may wish to reconsider your position.
Signed
DC Enamhe, Grand Commander of Order of Malabor (GCOM)
Former Student Leader
Alumni Relations Officer
