DICON @60: Minister of State for Defence Calls for Presentation of Cutting Edge Solutions

As preparations for the celebration of DICON 60th anniversary and the maiden Africa Defence Industries Conference, the minister of State for Defence, Dr Mohammed Matawalle has  invited innovators, startups, and research institutions to present their cutting-edge solutions that can enhance national and regional security through the Defence Innovation Challenge.

The minister made the call during a pre-event press briefing in Abuja.

According to Matawalle the anniversary celebration with the  theme, “DICON @ 60: Future Frontiers in Africa’s Defence Technology,” underscores federal government’s  commitment to advancing defence capabilities through strategic partnerships, innovation, and technological advancements

He further said “the new DICON Act 2023 has the potential to significantly contribute to Nigeria’s national development and national security by:a. Boosting foreign exchange earnings through local production of defence equipment.b. Creating jobs for skilled Nigerians.c. Reducing capital flight to foreign nations.

The minister noted that DICON was established in 1964 and has since been at the forefront of Nigeria’s defence manufacturing, contributing significantly to national security and technological advancement.

Describing the anniversary as a significant milestone, he said DICON has played a crucial role in Nigeria’s s defence sector adding that there have been lots of improvement over the years as  it is a new DICON that is celebrating 60.

“DICON’s journey began with a modest start, focusing on the production of small arms and ammunition. Over the years, the corporation expanded its capabilities, venturing into the manufacture of military vehicles, artillery, and other defence equipment”.

The event billed to take place between 9th to 15th August in Kaduna and Abuja will feature Exhibition, launching of the new DICON’s strategy and brand identity ,book launch and commemoration of DICON’s past chairmen and director generals.

In Abuja, the event  holds on the 14th and 15th at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua centre and stakeholders are invited .
