FG Test Runs  LNG Retrofitted Locomotive, to Save 60% Diesel Cost

By Ada Nkong

The Minister of transportation Sa’id Alkali says retrofitting of locomotives to run on 70% LNG could cut cost by as much as 60%.
The Minister noted this while on a testrun of the first retrofitted train on Africa from Idu in Abuja to Rigasa in Kaduna.
The Minister who boarded from Idu station and disembarked at Kubwa station said the whole idea is to save cost.

“When you look at the 70% component of the LNG, as against the 70% that was used on diesel, certainly the cost of using LNG will be drastically reduced to about 60 percent.”

“By the time all our locomotives are retrofitted, certainly the cost of transportation must drop drastically” .

Alkali ruled out the possibility of using 100% LNG due to the size of the engine.

He said the plan for now is to testrun one loco then go back and look at extant laws with ICRC before implementing fully.
Diesel 30% LNG 70%
According to Desadel the company that handled the retrofitting the test run train is the first locomotive in Africa tested with LNG.
