Criticisms have continued to trail the just concluded local government elections in Cross River State which some have described as ‘selection’.
Aggrieved youths took to social media to lament the hoarding of result sheets which they say emerged only after outcries in many quarters. According to them, photocopies of result sheets were then used to distract the public while massive thumb printing was going on in private houses leading to the victory of the leading party in all 18 local governments
A PDP stalwart Amb. Hart Modey who expressed disappointment at the process said the elections were a total undermining of democratic Ideals.
“In the recent local government elections in Cross River State, the cracks in Nigeria’s democratic process became glaringly apparent. Observers couldn’t help but question the validity of the outcomes, as reports surfaced that the opposition party heavily influenced the election results. This perceived manipulation has left many wondering whether Nigeria is veering toward a one-party system. Such a scenario not only undermines the democratic ideals the nation strives for but also stunts political diversity, which is crucial for societal progress”.
He expressed fear for the impact this style of democracy will have on the people of Cross River State and their faith in the system. According to him, “the aftermath of these elections poses a significant threat to community development. Instead of focusing on improving local infrastructure or educational systems, efforts and resources will now shift toward lengthy court battles. This pivot means that much-needed funds and energy, which could have transformed local communities, will instead sustain bureaucratic tussles. Relying on the legal system to sort electoral disputes deprives citizens of immediate improvements in their daily lives”.
He called for reforms to prevent the death of a democracy that is gradually coming of age
“To ensure the health of Nigerian democracy, transparency and fairness in elections must receive more emphasis. This requires reforms that boost trust in the electoral process and create a more level playing field for all parties. Without these changes, citizens will lose faith in the system designed to serve them, reinforcing disengagement from politics. By committing to authentic democratic practices, Nigeria can protect the ideals of representation and liberty, ensuring every vote counts and every voice matters”.
