Senate Holds Valedictory Session For Late Rt.Hon Joseph Wayas

The Senate on Thursday 28th November 2024 held a Valedictory Session in honour of the late former Senate president,Dr Joseph Wayas.

The remains of the Second Republic Senate President, Dr Joseph Wayas adorned with the Nigerian National Flag was received at the National Assembly by members of the senate.

Dr. Wayas served as Senate President from 1979 to 1983 and was a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. His leadership and commitment to democratic ideals have been widely praised.

Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio led the tributes, acknowledging Dr. Wayas’ contributions to Nigeria’s development.

Burial with the Nigerian National Flag is a symbolic honor bestowed upon individuals like Dr Wayas who have made significant contributions to the country. This tradition is usually reserved for national heroes, military personnel, and distinguished citizens who have demonstrated exceptional patriotism and service to Nigeria.

The valedictory session comes ahead of his burial on November 30, 2024 in his home town Obanliku local government area of Cross River State.

After the Valedictory Session the body departed for Calabar where the Governor received the corpse at the Margaret Ekpo Airport then it proceeded to the U J Esuene stadium for a night of tribute.

The President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, arrived in Calabar for the Night of Tributes honouring the late Distinguished Senator Dr. Joseph Wayas,  former Senate President of Nigeria.

Upon his arrival at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, he was warmly received by Governor Bassey Otu, accompanied by Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, members of the State Executive Council, and other top government officials.
