2025 UN Day for Older Persons:Stakeholders Advocate Greater Inclusion, Empowerment of Older Persons

The need to harness the potentials of older persons in national development has been emphasized.

Speaking at a roundtable to commemorate the 35th UN International day of older persons organized by the National Human Rights Commission,United Nations in Nigeria and the Dave Omokaro Foundation.

The Theme for this year’s celebration is Older Persons Driving Local and Global Agenda: Our Aspirations, Our Well Being Our Rights .

Present at the event were the UM Resident Co-ordinator Mr Malik Falls, Executive Secretary NHRC Tony Olukwu represented by Bar. Bobbo, Goodwill Ambassadors for Age Friendly Services and Elder Justice Advocacy led by the National Coordinator Dr Peter Igho  the Emir of Pasali ,the Hakimi of Agwai among others.

The event featured a robust panel session on the theme moderated by Dr.Emem Omokaro, Executive Director Dave Omokaro Foundation and Pioneer DG National Senior Citizens Center where older persons spoke on the challenges facing them and came up with a communique proffering solutions.

The fact that the ageing population is growing and the need to protect the dignity and independence of older persons as well as empowering them economically to be able to handle the high cost of care associated with getting old were some of the issues raised.
