Nigeria Beats Egypt to Win AFCON Bronze

By Ada Nkong

Nigeria maintained their perfect record in Africa Cup of Nations third-place playoff matches as the Super Eagles defeated the Pharaohs of Egypt 4-2 on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca.

The two sides were unable to find a breakthrough, with only two shots on target recorded – both by Nigeria – as the contest gradually petered out, leaving penalties to decide the outcome.

After Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Mohamed Salah both saw their opening penalties saved, Victor Akor got Nigeria off the mark. Their position was strengthened immediately when Omar Marmoush was denied by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who emerged as the hero with two crucial saves, allowing Moses Simon to make it 2-0.

Although Ramy Rabia briefly reduced the deficit, Alex Iwobi made no mistake from 12 yards to put Nigeria on the verge of victory.

Mahmoud Sabar converted his kick to keep Egypt’s hopes alive, but Ademola Lookman calmly fired home the decisive penalty, sparking celebrations among the large Nigerian contingent and ensuring the Super Eagles ended the tournament with a hard-earned bronze medal.
