Tension as Reps Disagree Over Electoral Act Amendment

Y Ada Nkong

After adopting the Votes and Proceedings of the previous sitting, tension erupted on the floor of the House of Representatives as lawmakers sought to rescind the earlier passage of the Electoral Act amendment.

The Speaker, hon. Tajudeen Abbas, put the question to a voice vote. While the “nays” clearly appeared louder across the chamber, the Speaker ruled in favour of the “ayes” and struck the gavel — a decision that immediately triggered protests from members.

The chamber descended into a rowdy session, with lawmakers shouting in objection to the ruling.

In an attempt to calm frayed nerves, the Leader of the House, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, moved a motion for the House to proceed into an executive session.

However, when the motion was subjected to a voice vote, the “nays” again appeared louder, signalling resistance from members and further prolonging the disorder on the floor. Despite the opposition, the House eventually proceeded into an executive session behind closed doors.
