Maiden National Diaspora Awards: Akinwunmi, Okonjo-Iweala,Others Honored_ Ada Nkong

The maiden edition of the awards to show appreciation to Nigerians in diaspora who have performed exceptionally and brought glory to Nigeria was part of activities to mark the 2023 diaspora day celebration.

The awards which took place at the statehouse conference hall started with the various diaspora organizations like NIDO America,NIDO Europe, NIDO UK and NIDO South Africa taking turns to talk about their recent support and outreaches back home ranging from medical to education and ICT.

The various representatives appreciated NIDCOM under the leadership of Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa for the role they have played do far in ensuring that Nigerians in diaspora are as comfortable as possible. They all pledged their commitment to doing more to give back to the nation.

The secretary NIDCOM, Engr Sule Bassi who called on Nigerians in diaspora to stay connected congratulated the pioneer awardees and encouraged them to do more.

He outlined the categories of awards which include agriculture, philanthropy, ICT, education and leadership, medicine and healthcare, politics, humanitarian services and diaspora icons.

The awards were given out by the chairman NIDCOM supported by designated persons. Amina Mohammad former minister for environment won the global diaspora icon award. Other awardees include Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Dr Akinwunmi Adesina who won diaspora icon of the year, Prof Augustine Esoghae, Prof Jeffery Okogbua and Prof Faruk Ahmed.

While diaspora students from Ukraine commended NIDCOM for their role in relocating and working with them during the recent crisis, Saudi Arabia association of Nigerians and some others presented gifts to Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

The award also featured entertainment from Ore a saxophonist, Jerry a diaspora artiste and Teni.
