Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to equipping the Nigerian Navy with the resources, capabilities, and enabling environment required to build a modern, technology-driven force capable of safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime interests.
The Minister made this known as Special Guest of Honour at the 70th Anniversary Ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night in Lagos, during the grand finale of a week-long celebration marking seven decades of service to the nation.
In a statement by Leah Katung-Banatunde, Special Assistant Media to the Minister, he said the future of the Navy lies in leveraging innovation, advanced surveillance systems, intelligence capabilities, unmanned technologies, cyber defence tools, and data-driven operations to address evolving security threats.
“The future of the Nigerian Navy lies in its ability to harness cutting-edge technology and strengthen collaboration with regional and international partners. A modern, technology-driven Navy will enhance maritime domain awareness, improve operational effectiveness, and contribute significantly to collective security in the Gulf of Guinea and beyond,” he stated.
Katung-Babatunde also said General Musa commended the Chief of the Naval Staff, officers, ratings, and civilian staff for their professionalism, discipline, and resilience over the past 70 years. He described the Service as a model of organisational excellence and expressed appreciation to Nigeria’s international partners for their support in promoting maritime security and stability.

He noted that the Navy’s operations have had a direct impact on Nigeria’s blue economy by protecting sea lanes, offshore oil and gas infrastructure, and other critical maritime assets. The Service, he added, remains at the forefront of efforts to combat piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, and other maritime crimes.
“Through active participation in internal security operations and support to sister services and security agencies, the Navy has played a vital role in maintaining peace and stability, thereby creating the secure environment necessary for economic growth and national development,” he said.
The Minister congratulated officers and ratings honoured during the event, including those recognised posthumously, for their dedication, professionalism, and sacrifice.
“Their selfless service upholds the highest traditions of the Nigerian Navy and inspires future generations. Tonight, we celebrate not only individual accomplishments but also the collective spirit of excellence that continues to propel the Service forward,” he remarked.
On the Ceremonial Sunset.
The Ceremonial Sunset is one of the most enduring naval traditions worldwide. It symbolises duty, honour, and the seamless transition of responsibility from one watch to another, reminding all that while individual duties may end, the Navy’s vigilance endures.
Leah says as the Nigerian Navy marks its 70th anniversary, the Ministry of Defence joins all Nigerians in celebrating this milestone and commends all personnel for their steadfast dedication to the security, unity, and prosperity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
